I have black hair that is about 4 inches past shoulder legnth, with straight-across bangs. My hair is naturally straight, but sometimes I wear it slightly wavy and someimes I straigten it and make it totally straight. I want to get highlights for back-to-school. I don't want anything punk--I want them to look natural and pretty, but I also don't want something that you can barely see. What color would look good with black hair? I want something not too subtle, and not too stand-out. I'm 14 by the way, gonna be a freshman in high school, so I want something that would look good for teenagers.

Well blonde shades are pretty but lightning hair that dark can be tricky. Sometimes it will look brassy. Agianst black hair really light blonde does look great!! I know you said nothing to bold but a dark red color would be pretty agianst dark hair!!

Highlights just don't work with black hair. It's a blond thing. Wait another 45 or so years and nature will highlight your hair with silver. I waited and it happened. Good luck.
